If you examine it culturally and psychologically, you'll find that women's voices are regarded as being more approachable and kind. Users are more receptive to women's gentle voices. This is one of the main reasons why every AI voice assistant utilizes female voices by default. Users believe that female voices are more trustworthy and that they are more concerned than male voices, which undoubtedly reinforces gender stereotypes and imbalances in the future of AI said Dr Amutha Manavalan, a professor at St Joseph’s University.

Artificial intelligence (AI) significantly impacts every aspect of our lives in the modern, high-tech environment. AI has made significant progress in imitating human interaction, from virtual assistants to humanoid robots.

Manavalan opined that AI is the new future. Medical science has already explored precision many years earlier. Other spectrums are actively promoting it to their maximum. AI is also considered as the 'new thing' in the industry and it's very much from the perspective of the West. “This might sound absurd but it's a cruel reality,” she added.

The predominance of gender stereotypes, on the other hand, stands out, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence whether it's automated announcements on public transit or virtual assistants like Alexa, Siri, or Cortana, female voices or avatars dominate in the AI world.

Feeding on the tightrope effect

The biases also contribute to a phenomenon known as the "tightrope effect," in which women must simultaneously adopt prescriptively "masculine" traits like assertiveness in order to advance in the workplace while being expected to have traditionally "feminine" traits in order to be liked.

Gender roles in AI and robotics frequently match to real-world roles. For example, research from a variety of sources indicates that there is a considerable gender disparity in the AI talent pool. Women are still significantly less likely than men to pursue employment in artificial intelligence, research, and development.

Wrapping up

Voice technology is still a relatively new tool. There are extra steps that the commercial sector, the government, and civil society should take to reshape our collective conceptions of gender and artificial intelligence in addition to ordinary updates or bug repairs.

“The instructions show a man but the voice is of a woman. It is something that is culturally engraved in our psyche that the woman gives instruction in a polite and soft voice thus, is more acceptable than a male voice,” Manavalan explained.

However, in order to assure justice and eliminate gender stereotypes in the creation of virtual agents, an emphasis on human-machine interactions has been made. More women are actively sought out and promoted for positions in AI research, and investors are urged to fund female-led companies.
