They are concerned that AI will ultimately replace human writers and actors altogether.
In a declaration, the WGA said that, "AI is an effective tool that has the ability to revolutionize the amusement enterprise. But we have to ensure that AI is utilized in a way that benefits all workers, not only a pick out few.”

SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher stated that "AI is not yet able to replicate the creativity and artistry of human performers. We are devoted to making sure that our individuals are included in activity alternatives and that they may be compensated fairly for their work.”
The protest comes at a time when AI is rapidly turning into a greater sophistication and is being utilized in a much wider variety of industries. In the film industry, AI is already being used to generate scripts, dialogue, and music. It is also being used to create special effects and to personalize content for one of a kind audience.
The Hollywood protest is a reminder that the upward thrust of AI is not without its challenges. As AI will become more powerful and extensive, it is crucial to remember its impact on workers and to make sure that it is far used in a responsible and equitable manner.

Maruthu Pandiyan, an assistant professor at St. Joseph's University, shared his thoughts at the Hollywood protest and the future of AI in the entertainment industry. He believes that the rise of AI is inevitable, and that the entertainment enterprise is not an exception. However, he is also of the opinion that AI will not completely update human writers and actors. Instead, he believes that AI will be used as a tool to decorate the paintings of human creatives. "AI is an eventuality. We can't prevent it no matter how much of a strike we do. We ought to see how we are able to adapt to it,” he added.
Pandiyan believes that AI has the capacity to democratize the movie enterprise. He talked about how many talented writers and filmmakers have their thoughts rejected with the aid of studios due to the fact that they do not match into the current studio device. However, with AI, anybody can create and distribute their personal content material, irrespective of the budget or connections.
“AI may want to deliver a possibility to many writers and filmmakers who have top notch ideas, however, do not see the display. It could be like a kind of decentralized machine," he explained.
Of course, the commencement of AI also poses some demanding situations for the industry. Few people will lose their jobs to AI. However, new jobs may be created as the industry evolves.

“When machines came, the same fear was there. Human beings feared they will lose their jobs. But we continue to exist, we discovered something else, perhaps like that. This has been happening, it isn't always something very new,” he added.
It is vital to discover ways to guard human creativity in the age of AI. He recommended that one way to do that is to develop new legal guidelines and regulations that govern the usage of AI in the entertainment industry. We should discover a way to manipulate it. However, it is important to be aware of the challenges that AI poses, and to locate approaches to protect human creativity in the age of AI.

When it comes to acting, the sudden rise of artificial intelligence has widened the gap between the industry employees and the entertainment unions. The Hollywood strike has led the entertainment industry into re-thinking how AI can take over most of their job titles. Along with script writing and cinematography, acting has also been one of the longstanding tensions. AI is now changing the way the world works, only by simply using some AI generated tools you can get your work done. Filmmaker Justine Bateman has mentioned that this is an existential crisis and there would be no thriving future for actors in the filming industry. SAG-AFTRA that has had 160,000 members on strike, is afraid that artificial intelligence will lead to far fewer employed actors in the future.

AI is now used to make music, art, and even write scripts, conversations, and stories. With AI algorithms in action, the casting directors can easily look for actors who might be a good fit for a particular role. They can now analyze things like how actors look in a particular costume or attire. Their expressions and facial movements are more or less decided with the help of AI. It doesn’t stop with this; it enables the creation of virtual characters. These virtual characters act in companion to actors. These new innovations provide new ways of storytelling. And with this they reduce the need for actual actors to actually fill in the role.
On the other hand, if AI provides opportunities, it also encourages competition among the actors in the industry. Actors must contend with AI-generated avatars, deepfake technology, and virtual actors AI Avatars. Here, job security becomes a concern as producers explore cost-effective AI alternatives for certain roles.

An example for de-ageing using technology
You can now generate actors using AI Generate Actors with customizable ages, facial features, clothing and more. As per a study conducted on Artificial Intelligence as an Innovation in the Film Industry in 2023, by Abhijit Ghosh, using the technology, actors who have been in front of the camera for a long period can be made younger or digital characters can be created. This eliminates the need for multiple performers to portray the same role at various stages of life while also preserving the character’s identity across time. The development of diverse digital.
Speaking to Digitally yours, Nisha Yash Ram, an actor and theatre artist said that, “This is going to be a proper business, but in a way, it cannot show everything. We might miss out on certain emotions when it comes to AI. As an audience, I think even AI has a limitation. They might cry only in one certain way. And when it comes to a sad emotion, there are so many other layers that an actor should work on to get that exact emotion for that situation. Whereas all the AI models will perform in the same way because it is just fed in that way”.

Ram who has worked in several films like Manaroopa, Nam Gani B Com pass, Secrets, expressed how AI has encouraged competition among the actors, an actor’s career became more competitive after the invention of mobile. Now, with AI, we should be even more extra careful. It is more challenging when it comes to looks, because I probably will have the desired shape, which might go even more glamorous. Even though now we use all these editing software to look in a particular way.
According to Chris MacLean, a visual effects supervisor for Apple TV show foundation, it has become increasingly common for big media productions to create digital doubles for some characters. This kind of technology plays a role in any TV, video or TV show.

The onset of AI does not limit its effects on actors and writers but can affect the other facets of the film industry like cinematography and editing. Although the fight remains between the studios, writers and actors, it is still generating problems in other jobs, mainly for makeup artists, directors and producers. AI is rapidly leaping into the film industry. It is being used to make movie trailers, pre-production and do editing. Filmmakers may now edit video, add VFX, enhance clips, and apply colour grading by using programs like Descript, Colourlab.ai, Topaz Lab, and others. All of this aids in improving quality, controlling time, and cutting costs. It should come as no surprise, that one day, a strike can be led by the editors and cinematographers. So, the issue at hand is whether AI is a blessing or a curse for the industry.
In accordance with the SAG-AFTRA strike, Ajay Chandran, an assistant professor at St. Joseph’s University and cinematographer said that he agrees about the salary issue but AI cannot replace human intelligence. When asked how AI can affect cinematography and editing, he said, “Human input is necessary. In editing it can help to make things easier but I don’t think AI is advanced enough to make decisions regarding cinematography, editing or direction. If you go with the normal editing, exchanging two shots might impact the whole story which can be done by humans who are seeing the footage in real time. I don’t think it will ever take over. Even if it is a robot arm operating the camera, the input has to be given by a human being. I don’t know how well an AI robot can see what is in front of them and do the necessary mise-en-scene or how well it knows how to frame and compose the movements.”

AI is now being used to make short films. Such films can be undeniably the start of AI’s entry into the film arena. In May, 2023, a film called The Frost: Part one directed by Josh Rubin and produced by Waymark Creative Labs was released. The script of the film was entered into Open AI’s model, DALL-E 2 to generate all the shots of the film. The film narrates the journey of a group of people who set out to investigate a strange signal coming from a mountain in Antarctica.
In another instance, to showcase how AI can be used in filmmaking, Hashem AI-Ghaili created a short film called Last Stand with AI. Ghaili is a Yemini science communicator, director and producer. On his YouTube channel, he shares video content about science and technology. Some part of his content is self-produced. The film is about alien spacecrafts entering the earth’s atmosphere and the chaos it has led to with world leaders addressing the issue. The films used AI to write the script, create concept art and generate the voices used in the films.
Thus, the influence of AI on all the sectors is undeniable. Its evolution of AI is accompanied with benefits and challenges. It can perform the unimaginable and is the light at the end of the tunnel for creatives who cannot access tools of a professional filmmaker. Nevertheless, as opined by many it cannot replace the human minds. But have to strike a balance between AI tools and humans.
