AI at director’s Chair: 7 short films redefining storytelling with artificial intelligence.

The world today have a mixed feeling about the constantly evolving artificial intelligence. An interesting twist in the realm of filmmaking is the use of AI to make films. By equipping creators with tools that make the process involved in making a movie easier, it has added a new dimension to storytelling. Currently AI has been used to create short films.


This article lists down seven outstanding films created by AI rather than humans. These short-films ranging from strange dreamscapes to the heartbreaks are changing how one understands storytelling and filmmaking.


1) Last Stand


Hashem AI-Ghaili produced a short film titled Last Stand with AI to demonstrate how AI may be applied in filmmaking. Ghaili is a director, producer, and spokesperson for science in Yemini. He publishes videos about science and technology on his YouTube channel. He produces some of his own content. In the movie, world leaders discuss the topic of alien spacecraft entering the earth's atmosphere and the ensuing pandemonium. The scripts, concept art, and voices for the films were all written by artificial intelligence.

2) The Frost: Part 1


The Frost: Part 1 was directed by Josh Rubin and made by Waymark Creative Labs, was released in May 2023. To create all of the shots Josh needed for the movie, the script written by Rubin was fed into open AI's DALL-E 2 model. The story of the movie follows a group of people as they travel to Antarctica to look into a mysterious signal emanating from a mountain.

3)The City on Mars


Created by Mickmumpitz, a VFX turned AI filmmaker, The City of on Mars, is a short-film about a city on mars that offers unique opportunity to experience life there. It has a unique site called the Mars space center for an exhibition on all the equipment used for the first visit to Mars by humans. The AI tools used in the film were ChatGPT, mid journey Automatic Stable Diffusion Web UI, Depth Map Extension. Play.ht, and Adobe Podcast.

4) January


January was created by Bruno Carnide, an independent film director who has won several awards for his documentary and animation short films. The film narrated the story of a world where artists under the influence of AI have been forced to incorporate it in their artworks. Carnide used AI tools such as Dall-E for image generation, Depthy for 2.5D motion, ChatGPT, FakeYou for voice generation, Adobe Podcast for voice enhancement, Soun draw for music generation, and Vegas for Editing Software.

5)The Sinking City


The Sinking City is a text to AI generated short-film made by Chris Bailey who is a 3D artist. The films showed the wreckages of a sinking city. The Artist used Runway Gen 2 to generate the videos which were based on text prompts.

6)The Last Artist


The Last Artist is a short film was made by a YouTube creator named Machine Mythos dedicated to explore the combination of human creativity and artificial intelligence in the creation of short films. The film talks about the world conquered by artificial intelligence and how Claire, the narrator of the story revolts against the new status quo. Pika Labs was used for the generation of the films.

7)Gone


Gone is a film that tells the story of a man’s journey haunted by the memories of his lost lover. The neo-noir short film was created by Oliver McCann. He used Mid journey and Runway to generate the visuals for the film.

These films generated by AI showcase that the future of filmmaking is a collaborative journey of both human intelligence and the extraordinary potential of machine learning and use in the film industry. Even though the films don't have the same offering as a movie, it undoubtedly breaks the walls of limits for artists who have ideas but not the access to the required resources. With a good knowledge of AI filmmaking tools anyone can enter the world of digital filmmaking.
